A small, compact knife is useful for many everyday activities. Your occupation may require use of a knife quite often on the job. Kershaw, a well-respected knife manufacturer, started making knives in 1974 in Portland Oregon. Pete Kershaw sold knives for another large company but wanted to create his own products from his own designs. At that time, most Kershaw knives were made in Japan. In 1977, Kershaw became a wholly owned subsidiary of what became KAI USA, Ltd. The main manufacturing facility is now located in Tualatin Oregon.

Kershaw Scallion
, designed by Ken Onion, a renowned knife maker, is a handy everyday carry knife. It is small and lightweight, easy to open and close, very sharp right out of the box and fits nicely in a pocket or purse. It is simple to re-sharpen with conventional sharpeners or by using a sharpener from the manufacturer. The company offers free sharpening as well just by sending the knife to them.
The Scallion features a 2.25-inch blade made from 420HC stainless steel. Straight edge or partially serrated blades are available on different models. Handles come in stainless steel, anodized aluminum or fiberglass filled nylon. The nylon handles are rugged and durable. The contoured finish makes it easy to grip.
Anodized aluminum handles come in a variety of colors. Blue, red, green and camouflage are favorites. There is a pink version for those women that understand the importance of carrying a small knife. Stainless steel handles have a buffed finish and one model, coated with titanium-oxide, produces an interesting rainbow effect finish.
This knife is uniquely simple to open with either hand using one of two options. A thumb bar protrudes from the top of each side of the blade. A quick push on the bar with the left or right thumb engages the spring mechanism deploying the blade. A finger protrusion on top of the handle also allows blade deployment with a push with either index finger. Care must be taken when opening as it is very quick and the blade is extremely sharp.
After opening, a secure liner lock keeps the blade in place. A simple push with a thumb or finger unlocks the blade and it folds back into the handle. A tip lock secures the blade in the handle preventing accidental opening. Fully open the Scallion measures 5 3/4 inches. Closed it measures 3 1/2 inches. It weighs just 2.3 ounces.
The knife can be clipped to a pocket or the clip can be removed to make it even lighter and thinner. The contoured design allows it to be easily held and controlled. The Kershaw Scallion offers what many are looking for in an everyday carry knife.
